The common Cordyceps (more than 20 species) found in Chinese markets are evaluated and illustrated. We systematically introduce their taxonomies, allied species, hosts, distributions, yields, selling statuses, and market prices. We summarize and comment on the medicinal value and food safety of Conlyceps. The concept of "cordyceps" is explained, the "best" cordyceps is explored, and Chinese cordyceps culture is analyzed. We suggest using the word "cordyceps" instead of the Latin Cordyceps to report these important edible and medicinal mushrooms.

A group of original papers is assembled for this thematic-papers issue on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The idea for a thematic-papers issue came from Associate Editor and Guest Editor, Jicheng Li. Jicheng's idea was to introduce concepts and studies of TCM to the editorial board ofThe Anatomical Recordand the Journal's readership. Thus, nine papers are published that deal with biomarkers, animal models, or treatments of TCM syndromes. Uniquely, Jicheng's effort culminated in acupuncture treatment of the editorial board members by a licensed physician of TCM. We learned, first-hand by Dr. Weixue Wang, about this ancient and vibrant holistic philosophy and medical practice. Our pleasure is to share the topic and our experience with you.

Nano traditional Chinese medicine (nano TCM) refers to bioactive ingredients, bioactive parts, medicinal materials or complex prescription, being approximately 100 nm in size, which are processed by nanotechnology. Nano TCM is a product of the TCM modernization, and is an application of nanotechnology in the field of TCM. This article reviews literatures on researches of nano TCM, which were published in the past 15 years. Different nanotechnologies have been used in preparation of Nano TCM in view of the varying aims of the study. The mechanical crushing technology is the main approach for nanolization of TCM material and complex prescription, and nanoparticulate drug delivery systems is the main approach for nanolization of bioactive ingredients or bioactive parts in TCM. Nano TCM has a number of advantages, for example, enhancing the bioavailability of TCM, reducing the adverse effects of TCM, achieving sustained release, attaining targeted delivery, enhancing pharmacological effects and improving the administration route of TCM. However, there are still many problems that must be resolved in nano TCM research. The main challenges to nano TCM include the theory system of TCM modernization, preparation technology, safety and stability, etc.

Traditionality This annual review summarizes the hot research mechanisms of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of liver disease, especially hepatitis, liver injury, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, liver fibrosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma in 2019, which can provide a comprehensive description of the hot spots and ongoing research areas. Abstract Background: Currently, the treatment of liver diseases remains an unsolved problem due to its complicated etiology and pathogenesis. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used for liver disease treatment for thousands of years. Disease treatment using TCM compounds conforms to the concept of “holism”, which coincides with the complicated pathogenic mechanisms of liver diseases. However, the mechanisms have not been clearly explained due to the complex components and multi-targets, which is a big obstacle TCM’s popularity and application. In recent years, studying the mechanisms and identifying the novel ingredients in herbal medicines are becoming a hot spot for many researchers. Therefore, we obtained literature in PubMed and summarized the progress of TCM’s active ingredients and formulas in treating various liver diseases in 2019. Based on the literature, flavonoids, polysaccharides, saponins, and alkaloids, as well as Chinese medicine formulas, such as Ba-Bao pill and Yin-Chen-Hao decoction, have attracted much attention. In addition, we also focused on the application of new omics analysis techniques, such as metabolomics, network pharmacology, and other omics analyses in the study of TCM formulas.

Traditionality TCM syndrome is a kind of pathological profiles that reflect signs and symptoms at a certain stage of a disease, which is the most essential guidelines for the prescription of Chinese herbal formulae and also an important classification for CRC TCM therapy. A clear understanding biological basis of TCM syndrome will help the clinical diagnosis and the treatment for CRC patients hopefully. Abstract Background: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome, also named syndrome, are comprehensive and integral analyses of clinical information which helps to guide different individualized treatment prescriptions. Methods: Thirty healthy controls and 80 colorectal cancer (CRC) patients (including 33 Spleen Qi Deficiency syndrome, 23 Dampness Heat syndrome, 17 Blood Stasis syndrome and 7 other syndrome) were enrolled into this study. Human mRNAs were extracted from peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The gene expression for CRC patients with different TCM syndrome was determined by microarray and qRT-PCR. Results: Spleen Qi Deficiency, Dampness Heat and Blood Stasis were the most common syndromes in CRC patients. There is a significant difference was found in mRNA expression levels (especially for PIK3CA, STAT3, SOX9 and KDM5C ) among Spleen Qi Deficiency, Dampness Heat and Blood Stasis syndrome groups. The higher mRNA levels of JNK1, TP53, MLH1, MSH6, PMS2, SOCS3, TCF7L2, FAM123B, PSAP, FBXW7, SALL4 and the lower expression of inflammatory cytokine IL-6 were found in Spleen Qi Deficiency group but not other syndrome types. The higher mRNA levels of KRAS, MUC16, EGFR, GRASP65, PIK3CA, MAPK7, CD24, STAT3, SLC11A1, Bcl-2, TXNDC17 and some inflammatory cytokines ( IL-6, IL-23, TNF-a, CXCR4 ) were found in Dampness Heat group but not other syndrome types. Blood Stasis syndrome showed higher expression of SOX9, MLH1, MSH6, KDM5C, PCDH11X, PSAP and SALL4 , and lower mRNA levels of PIK3CA, CD24, STAT3, CXCR4, TXNDC17 and TP53 . The CRC patients with Dampness Heat syndrome might have a poor prognosis than other syndrome types. Conclusion: The identification of syndrome conditions had different impacts on CRC prognosis, and which might be related with different mRNA expression levels. Some oncogenes and pro-inflammatory cytokines were highly expressed in Dampness Heat group but not other syndrome types, suggesting that the CRC patients with Dampness Heat syndrome might have a poor prognosis. Our results prelimitarily uncovered the molecular basis of syndrome differences in CRC prognosis, a better understanding for TCM treatment of CRC.

Recognizing the potential of globalizing traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), this review summarizes the current global use of TCM for COVID-19, status of the internationalization of TCM, and strategy on globalizing TCM for COVID-19. COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus disease that has sparked a pandemic in March 2020 affecting over 110 countries. Although researchers have been racing to develop targeted anti-COVID-19 treatment and vaccine, they are still currently unavailable. Thus, in treating patients infected with COVID-19, western medicine mainly recommended symptomatic treatment and monitoring. Existing drugs are used in the context of clinical trials, and the FDA still not yet approved these drugs for COVID-19. On the other hand, TCM proposed herbal treatment for suspected individuals to take within their observation period, as well as for confirmed COVID-19 patients to take during active phase of disease and during recovery. In China, Integrative Chinese-Western Medicine had been used in treating 91.5% of COVID-19 patients and showed its strength in reducing disease severity, shortening recovery time, and lowering the mortality rate. Despite obstacles in globalizing TCM for the treatment of COVID-19, promoting appropriate use of locally registered TCM products may prevent disease in susceptible individuals, improve the quality of life, and assist in the recovery of COVID-19 patients. With increasing global acceptance, TCM may play a more important role in the battle against infectious disease in the future.
